Palestine - 77 years of Struggle
Share
For 77 years, the people of Palestine have endured displacement, occupation, and systemic violence—a brutal reality that the world has too often ignored. But for Gen Z, a generation shaped by social justice, digital activism, and global solidarity, the Palestinian struggle isn’t just history—it’s a fight for human rights, freedom, and self-determination that demands our attention right now.
If you’ve ever felt overwhelmed by headlines, censored posts, or biased media coverage, you’re not alone. Let’s break it down: what’s happening, how we got here, and what you can do to stand with Palestine.
🏠 1948: The Nakba – When Palestine Was Stolen
If you want to understand the oppression of Palestinians, you have to start with the Nakba ("The Catastrophe") in 1948. After World War II, the Zionist movement, backed by Western imperial powers, pushed for a Jewish state in Palestine, despite the fact that Palestinians had been living there for centuries.
The result? Ethnic cleansing. Zionist militias violently expelled over 750,000 Palestinians from their homes, massacred civilians, and destroyed hundreds of Palestinian villages—a systematic attempt to erase Palestinian presence from the land.
And guess what? Those refugees and their descendants—now numbering in the millions—still can’t return home, while illegal Israeli settlements continue to expand on stolen land.
🚨 Reminder: Colonization isn’t ancient history. It’s still happening right now in Palestine.
⚠️ 1967: The Occupation That Never Ended
Fast forward to 1967, and Israel launches the Six-Day War, seizing Gaza, the West Bank, and East Jerusalem—Palestinian territories that remain occupied today. Since then, Israel has built illegal settlements, enforced apartheid laws, and implemented a brutal military occupation that controls every aspect of Palestinian life.
Imagine:
❌ Military checkpoints restricting your movement
❌ Your home demolished for an illegal Israeli settlement
❌ No freedom to travel, vote, or live without surveillance
❌ Daily harassment, arrests, and raids by the Israeli military
This isn’t just "conflict"—it’s settler colonialism and apartheid, upheld by Western governments and ignored by mainstream media.
💔 Gaza: The World’s Largest Open-Air Prison
If you’ve ever seen Gaza in the news, it’s usually after Israel has launched another bombing campaign. But what mainstream media won’t tell you is that Gaza has been under a brutal blockade since 2007—meaning 2.3 million people (half of them children) are trapped in a constant humanitarian crisis.
🚫 No free movement in or out.
🚫 Limited access to clean water, medical care, and electricity.
🚫 Regular bombings that destroy homes, schools, and hospitals.
This isn’t a war—it’s genocide in slow motion.
And yet? Gaza resists. Its people rebuild, educate, create art, and continue to fight for their freedom, even when the world turns away.
🛑 The "Two-State Solution" is a Lie
For decades, politicians have sold the world the idea of a "two-state solution"—a peaceful Palestinian state existing alongside Israel. Spoiler alert: Israel never intended for that to happen.
Reality check:
❌ Israel continues expanding settlements, stealing more land daily.
❌ Palestinians in the West Bank live under military occupation.
❌ Israel enforces an apartheid system that denies Palestinians equal rights.
A "solution" that requires an oppressed people to negotiate with their colonizers isn’t a solution—it’s just more oppression in disguise.
👊 What Can You Do? (Because Posting Isn’t Enough)
If you’re Gen Z, you already know that activism doesn’t stop at hashtags. Here’s how you can actually make an impact:
📢 1. Use Your Voice (And Be Unapologetic About It)
- Share Palestinian stories, art, and voices—not just news clips.
- Push back against biased media narratives that call Israel’s war crimes "self-defense."
- Educate yourself and others—knowledge is resistance.
💰 2. Support Palestinian Businesses & Aid Organizations
- Donate to groups like Medical Aid for Palestinians (MAP) or Palestinian Children’s Relief Fund (PCRF).
- Boycott Israeli brands profiting from apartheid (list: BDSMovement.net).
- Support Palestinian creators, artists, and businesses.
🗳️ 3. Hold Your Government Accountable
- Demand that your country stops funding Israeli apartheid (the U.S. alone gives Israel $3.8 billion per year).
- Call out politicians who support Israeli war crimes—email, protest, VOTE.
- Support BDS (Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions)—a peaceful movement pushing for economic pressure on Israel.
🔥 The Bottom Line: Palestine is a Fight for All of Us
Gen Z doesn’t just watch history—we shape it. Whether it’s Black Lives Matter, Indigenous rights, or fighting climate change, we’ve seen that injustice anywhere is injustice everywhere. Palestine is no different.
This isn’t just about land. It’s about freedom, human rights, and the right to exist.
You’re either on the side of liberation or the side of oppression—there is no neutral.
Free Palestine. Always.
